Broncos Their Own Worst Enemy

With all due respect to the Lethbridge Hurricanes – a talented bunch in their own right, it was the Swift Current Broncos who beat themselves in a Friday night tilt at the old Sportsplex.

The Broncos did everything in their power on special teams to make sure the Hurricanes would pick up the win on home ice. Nine ‘Cane powerplays, three power-play goals against, 0 / 6 on powerplay and a shorthanded goal against in a 4-2 loss.

Not only were the Broncos 0/6 in the man-advantage, they managed to take three penalties in the Hurricanes offensive zone while on the PP.

For me it wasn’t the penalties, it was the types of penalties. Not only that, it was where they were taking place on the ice.

On a positive note, 5-on-5 the Broncos were pretty solid.

Michael Stickland scored his first goal as a Bronco to even the game 1-1 in the first just after Ashton opened the scoring on the PP. Justin Dowling later scored a highlight reel goal as he danced around a ‘Canes defenseman and then beat Juha Metsola on the 2nd opportunity off a rebound.

Metsola was good too. He accounted for 29 saves and some star recognition.

The Broncos were dealt a blow before the game when captain Derek Claffey was scratched after warm-up with a lower body injury.

D Joel Rogers missed most of the 2nd period while he was getting stitched up after a puck rolled up his stick and into his mouth. The damage was nine – four stitches outside the mouth and five in.

Tonight, it’s round three of the Chynoweth Cup in Cranbrook. Just a week ago the two teams hooked up on a four player swap.

The Ice are coming off two impressive wins over the Calgary Hitmen.

We’re on the air at 7:30pm with the pre-game show, 8pm play-by-play.

The internet streaming was up and running tonight. Anyone have any problems? Drop me a comment if you have some streaming feedback.

Don't think the internet feed was working. I couldn't get it and heard others complain as well. Hopefully tonight.
