NHL Free Agent Frenzy; Hometown Kid Update

With all the free-agent signings over the last 24-48 hours here's one that won't hit the front page. (See below) But it's interesting for all the Lanigan folk who check this blog now and then.

Here it is.... a fellow Foley Crescent Crusher is on the move....

Jackets sign free-agent defenceman
July 02, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) --

The Columbus Blue Jackets agreed to a one-year contract Monday with defenceman Sheldon Brookbank. The 26-year-old Brookbank, selected as the American Hockey League's top defenceman last season, scored a career-best 15 goals and had 38 assists in 78 games with the Milwaukee Admirals.

He played three games with the Nashville Predators last year, picking up his only NHL point with an assist against Pittsburgh on Feb. 6.

Hopefully Sheldon can stick with Columbus. Nashville was just a tough situation for him to break in on a full-time basis. This should provide him a better opportunity.

I'm not going to list all the big signings in the NHL. A quick trip to any of the major sports networks will outline in detail who is going where.

Enjoy the last day of the long weekend,
Jon

I agree this sounds like a good move for Sheldon. After all I taught him everything he knows. Do you figure he has a chance at playing full time or will he get stuck on the farm the waiting for injuries?

I agree M you were quite the road hockey player in the day. You had to constantly keep your head up with your big brother trying to run everyone in sight...

I think he has a good shot of sticking - better than he did with Nashville.

Kris Russell of the Medicine Hat Tigers should make the team as a rookie. They have some veteran presence under contract but we'll see. I can see him being a 5th or 6th defenseman with the Jackets.
