Let's Drop the Puck!
The Swift Current Broncos host the Moose Jaw Warriors tonight at the Credit Union i-plex to get the season started. Face-off at 7:30pm. We're on the air at 7pm with the pre-game show.
Ryan Switzer will join myself for the call with Tim Tisdale away.
The Broncos will look to continue their recent success against the Warriors. This is the third year in a row the teams have met to begin the season. In 2007/08, the Broncos pulled one out of the fire in Moose Jaw tying the game with 1.3 seconds left and then winning in overtime. Last year the Broncos went into MJ and posted a 6-1 win thanks to a hat-trick from Cody Eakin.
The Warriors return 18-19 players from last year and should be much improved this season. In saying that, it just doesn't happen because everyone is older. It'll be up to them to take the step forward.
The Broncos could have a full line-up tonight but are still awaiting word of F Cody Eakin. For Eakin to make it back to Swift Current from D.C. in a day would be a challenge to say the least.
This is the only Broncos game this weekend. Their next action is in Prince Albert Wednesday and then in Brandon Friday.

Broncos Name Assistant Captains

Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb announced the captains for the 2009-10 season.
Wearing the captaincy again is 20 year old defenseman Derek Claffey. Named captain of the club after the trade deadline last season, Claffey is now in his second season wearing the "C".
His assistant captains are: 18 year old forward Cody Eakin and 20 year old defenseman Eric Doyle. Both Doyle and Eakin were "A's" last season as well.

D Eric Doyle on his fifth career "season opener".....
"Obviously it's a bit different than when I was 16 (in Everett) and playing my first game in the league. I was tentative and I think I actually threw-up before the game I was so nervous. Now, I'm used to the pace of the game, pace of the league and I think I can help lead some of these young guys and help guide them along the way."
D Eric Doyle on what he expects out of Moose Jaw in the season opener....
"I think they're still a little pissed-off about finishing last (last season). I think they have something to prove. I think it will be a hard-fought game. There won't be any easy points against them this year."
Assistant Coach Tim Kehler on a younger blue-line featuring two 16 year-olds in Reece Scarlett and Graeme Craig.....
"There are going to be some growing pain with those guys but the other side of it is as 16 year-old players, I think the progress we are going to be able to watch and evaluate as the year goes on will really be in leaps and bounds. I think they are tremendous athletes. It should be pretty exciting both from a coaching standpoint and from a fan standpoint to watch the development of these kids."

Another season of Homegrown Heroes is set. That means I will be contacting you for some stories and thoughts as your son either begins or continues there hockey career with the Broncos. The feature plays every game in the 2nd intermission.
Last night I had a good chat with both Aileen Wagner (Dillon) and Glen Dowling (Justin).

Eakin Update
A lot of fans are wondering about the status of Cody Eakin and if he will be back for the season opener Friday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
I chatted with him tonight...he's still in D.C. with the Capitals. He doesn't know much because he hasn't been told anything. He knows he does have practice in the morning. The Capitals have sent a couple players down to junior and have re-assigned a couple to their AHL affiliate in Hershey.
He's not on the exhibition game roster so it's more than likely he will be re-assigned tomorrow. Whether that means he can make it back for Friday's game is anyone's guess.
That's the latest.....
On another front, G Morgan Clark arrived at the rink just before the Broncos practice this afternoon. He was re-assigned by the Vancouver Canucks officially this morning.
